Spring Break in Costa Rica:

During Spring Break, March 28 – April 5, 2015, 7th and 8th grade FCPS students will travel to Costa Rica to visit and learn about rainforests and how Costa Ricans are trying to protect their environment! Students will visit a Sea Turtle conservatory, take a boat ride and learn about local recycling efforts, visit Monteverde, a Cloud Forest, to talk to scientists while learning about frogs and butterflies, and more! The cost of the trip includes everything except pocket money for souvenirs, bottled water, sodas and snacks. Summer in the Dominican Republic:

In the summer of 2015, FCPS is offering a stimulating service learning program, Dare to Dream, through Education First (EF).  The program will take place in Monte Cristi in the Dominican Republic.  During the course of the trip, FCPS students will work with EF and a local non-profit organization on projects focusing on early childhood development, Spanish literacy, English language instruction, and life skills.  In addition to leading English classes for Dominican students, other highlights of the trip include meringue dance lessons, visiting a local cultural market and hiking to the beach at Puerto el Morro.  The trip price includes round- trip airfare, all transportation, regional style meals, hotels, a full-time tour director, and travel insurance.  Students on the trip will earn 30+ service hours.  Current 6th and 7th grade students from FCPS middle schools are encouraged to enroll.  Glasgow’s Lindsay Mulcahy (lmulcahy@fcps.edu) is one of the three FCPS teachers leading this trip.  For more information, feel free to contact Lindsay or visit:http://www.eftours.com/tour-website/1561686PV

Family Life Education (FLE) Parent Information Nights

Attention all parents of 7th and 8th grade students: You are invited to attend a meeting to preview the 7th and 8th grade Human Growth & Development lessons and materials and to talk with school staff about the program. The meeting will be held on Thursday, September 18 from 5:30-6:30pm in the Health Classrooms prior to the Back to School Night.  All program materials and videotapes will be available for your review at that time. Our 6th grade parent FLE preview night will be on Tuesday, October 7 from 5:00pm-7:00pm in the Health Classrooms.

As you may know, parents who do not wish to have their children participate in Human Growth and Development instruction may choose to opt their children out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more of these lessons, please fill out the form for your child’s grade level which will be available at the meeting on Monday and with all Health/PE teachers, and return it to your child’s teacher. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of the HGD lessons by using the form sent home earlier in the school year, you do not need to return this form.

Please visit the website http://www.fcps.edu/is/hpe/fle.shtml for additional information and copies of the FLE opt-out forms.

We look forward to working as your partner in providing information that will help your child make healthy choices as he/she experiences the exciting changes and new challenges that occur during the middle school years.

Thank You,

Glasgow Middle School Administration and Health & Physical Education Staff
